An Excerpt from The Cielo

When my cousin Fosca was recounting stories of how her family had survived during the German occupation of Tuscany during World War II, she told of an incident in which German soldiers stormed into her house as she was making pasta. One of them, she said, put his pistol on the kitchen table right next to her dough. That image stayed with me, and I decided to expand the scene into the first chapter of The Cielo: A Novel of Wartime Tuscany.
